…and help local growers.

As you may know, spring is an especially intense time for agriculture, including agroforestry production like mushrooms. Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute instructors Steve Gabriel and Michael Burns are exceptionally busy sowing and tending animals, plants, trees, and infrastructure at their respective permaculture projects.

Your help is sought to get a large harvest of logs inoculated with shiitake in exchange for experience with inoculation skills and a couple take-home logs.

June 15 @ Deer Run Lane with Steve Gabriel

12 pm to 5 pm

Steve Gabriel will host at his farm on Deer Run Lane in Mecklenburg. He will offer a presentation and tour of his woods where he has 1,000 shiitake logs, and demonstrations of lions mane, oyster, and stropharia inoculations. Steve has been growing mushrooms for eight years and works for Cornell doing mushroom crop research for farmers and is co-authoring an agroforestry book “Farming the Woods” with Cornell Professor Ken Mudge. You can reach him at <steve@fingerlakespermaculture.org> or leave a message at 607-527-0607.

Session is limited to 10 participants. Each participant is asked to contribute a $10 materials fee, and their dedicated labor during the session they attend. Each participant will receive two inoculated shiitake logs to take home. Snacks and beverages are provided.

June 9, 29 & 30 @ Cayuta Sun with Michael Burns

12 pm to 5 pm

Michael Burns will offer additional opportunities to practice shiitake inoculation in his woods near Cayutaville. Michael has been producing shiitake mushrooms as a small, home-scaled project until this year. Now the Cayuta Sun Farm is inoculating its first large batch of logs for the 2014 season. Cayuta Sun is also the site of the Finger Lakes Permaculture Institute’s summer design course, and we will take a short tour of site’s systems. You can reach him at <michael@fingerlakespermaculture.org> or leave a message at 607-527-0607.

Sessions are limited to 10 participants. Each participant is asked to contribute a $10 materials fee, and their dedicated labor during the session they attend. Students and the unemployed may attend for free. Each paying participant will receive two inoculated shiitake logs to take home. Snacks and beverages are provided. Please contact Michael if the fee or timing does not work for you. A couple helpers on other inoculation workdays would be welcome.
